change

Move over toilet paper…there is a new shortage in town: coins.

That’s right y’all, as 2020 keeps rolling, now apparently there is a change shortage, and major retailers are making changes because of it.

It’s because we spent time in quarantine, instead of out spending cash. Some small businesses and airports aren’t accepting cash ( BNA O’Charley’s being one recently for myself) in an effort to avoid COVID-19 infection. Consumers are also hesitant to carry cash as we become a more electronic-driven society and because of COVID concerns.

So, that means coins haven’t been in circulation for a couple of months and now the Federal Reserve is facing a shortage.

Chains like CVS and Krogers are making adjustments

Krogers basically isn’t giving coin change (unless you go through the dreaded self-checkout. You know, where you do their work for them but don’t pay less). You can donate the change balance to their Zero Hunger program , or have it applied to your Krogr card for later to apply to a future purchase.

CVS is encouraging customers to donate to charity.

Banks are also complaining about the shortage.

No response from the Fed yet.

Of course, all give the simple solution of using your debit card. However, the shortage seems to be particularly affecting low-income households who may not have those means. And, also who have to count every penny.

So, if you gotta bunch of change y’all, roll it up and use it on your next payment or exchange it at your bank. Remember, only you can cause change.
