Many of y’all will enjoy the Ball Drop to ring out the old year and decade, and begin in the new. Resolutions will be made…and broken. Alcohol will be involved for many. And with that will come that first resolution the next morning: “If you just make this hangover go away, I’ll never drink again” . This usually doesn’t take long to break.
So, how to get rid of that hangover? Here are some remedies:
- Research suggests that impurities produced when alcohol is distilled can make you feel nauseous. The sweeter the drink, the higher the level of impurities. Malt liquors and red wine are especially toxic.
- The headache? That’s dehydration.
- Drink water. AND something with electrolytes like Gatorade
- Grease up- take a spoonful of olive oil before going out. Bacon, pizza, etc. are good foods to eat when drinking because fat slows alcohol absorption
- Sugar high – OJ or sugary foods speed up alcohol metabolism
- Burnt toast – Thoughts that the “charcoal” will help absorb the impurities the next morning
- Take Ginger…not Mary Ann – For centuries, people have taken ginger to reduce nausea and vomiting. Make a tea of ginger root and brown sugar before going out.
- Prickly Pear Cactus- If you can find the extract, take it before going out. Said to reduce hangovers up to 50%
- Grab a nap and a drink- Take a nap , give your body time to recover. Make this mixture: Stir 1 teaspoon of salt and 8 teaspoons of sugar into 5 cups of distilled water.Whisk in ½ cup orange juice or ¼ cup mashed banana.- Sip on before, between and after naps.
- For hiccups, my good bartender friend Jenna at 55 South in Franklin, Tn. says this works every time: glass of water, light a match, drop in water, drink immediately. Don’t swallow match.
- And my buddy Steph at Circa in Thompson’s Station, Tn says: lemon with 3 drops bitters and 1/2 spoon of sugar over top ..suck lemon for nausea. For hangovers, he suggests a virgin bloody mary or just a glass of Zing Zang.
Most importantly, don’t drink and drive. Hydrate. And be safe this New Year’s Eve Y’all.
